Mira closed her fist tightly as the mist wrapped them in a dark gray cloud. Someone bumped into her shoulder and she latched on to whoever it was. She didn’t want to die, but she knew the spirits of the departed had come for them.

The arm she held on to like a deathtrap swung violently, trying to dislodge her.

“Let me go.” It was Clintok.

But she didn’t listen. She held on anyway and he stopped putting up a fuss as they both stood still in the mist, unable even to see a hand’s length in front of them. Mira let her eyes open a crack and peered out. She could feel the moist mist on her open eyes and her face caught tiny beads of moisture.

A loud sound like a boulder falling from a high mountain echoed all around them, but they didn’t move. The fright was so complete Mira forgot all about their quest and all about her plans to do right by her parent’s name.

The sounds went away after some time and so did the mist. It crept back out of the forest almost as fast as it had arrived.

Mira peered at Clintok. His matted red hair almost covered his eyes. He didn’t look nearly as frightened as she thought he’d be. Perhaps he was just better at hiding his emotions than she thought. A quick glance around revealed that the others were gone. They were alone in the vast forest.

“You can let go now,” Clintok said.

She realized she was still holding his arm as tightly as she could and quickly let her arm drop to the side. “All right.” She couldn’t muster more words than that.

Where did the others go? Were they taken off by ghosts?

“I don’t know about you, girl, but I’m getting out of here,” Clintok said and marched off into the wilds.

Mira went after him but tripped over something and fell to the ground. It was her own bow. She must have dropped it during her panic in the mist.

“Wait! Wait for me!”

He stopped and turned back to her, shaking his head in obvious disdain.

She scampered to her feet.

“How...how do you know where you’re going? Mira asked. She looked around. It all appeared the same to her and it was difficult to know which direction they had been heading before the mist and the loud echoing began.

“I don’t. But I’m not staying here for another moment. And if you’re coming with me, we go now,” Clintok said.
